Campaigning to curb supermarket power

East Hunsbury, Northamptonshire

In 2005, Tesco extended its superstore in the area to an Extra hypermarket. In 2007, Tesco requested planning permission to build a white cladding structure with freezer and chiller units and a docking station for internet shopping business. Residents were concerned about the additional disruption this would cause and have objected on the grounds of light pollution, noise pollution, air pollution and increased traffic. Tesco withdrew its application but re-submitted it in July 2007.

In 2011 campaigners fought plans by Tesco to increase the floor space of its Mereway store by 38 percent. They are planning to use a residential close entrance which already gives access to a leisure centre for access to their dot com service and their tenants. There also is a major exit/entrance on an already busy residential road.
