Tesco applied for planning permission to put up its signage at the former SM Prior and Son shop in Fore Street, where it announced in December 2014 it was planning to open a Tesco Express.

A petition of more than 600 names against the store was handed to East Devon District Council.

Budleigh Salterton Town Council opposed the application.

In 2007 Tesco submitted plans for a development including a 5,000 sq m store on the edge of town. Local residents formed the Save Our Market Town - Keep Crediton Thriving campaign to oppose the development. Campaigners submitted an objection letter and supplementary objection.
