Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Tesco had been seeking planning permission to build a mezzanine floor which would have included an expanded range of non-food items and a cafe.

Tiverton Trading Association objected to the plans because of fears the expansion could harm their trade. Mid-Devon District Council recommended refusal of the project, prompting Tesco to withdraw its application.

Torquay, Devon

In July 2011 Tesco unveiled plans for a 40,000sq ft store at Edginswell Business Park. But the development could face opposition from Torbay Council, with some Councillors fearing another out-of-town store could sound the death knell for Torquay town centre.
